Christmas Comes to Tanjung Sepat

Two evenings ago, together with several students, we decided to take a rather long drive to a coastal village, Tanjung Sepat, for some seafood dinner. At the same time, we also took the opportunity to catch up with Lik Chang, one of the seminary students who is doing his year end field education at the Chinese Methodist Church in Tanjung Sepat.

After dinner, Lik Chang proudly showed us his creative handiwork to liven up the atmosphere in preparation for the Christmas celebration. He has put in more than 2 weeks of effort to get this lighting ready. Strategically placed outside the church, it surely lights up the night at this sleepy village and attracts some attention from the villagers who pass by the church every day. Well done, Lik Chang!

Well done, Lik Chang! Can I ask him to make the same thing at my church as well?

Better still, ask him to design a new one next year, and make sure he does his year end field education in Melaka!

Maybe we can ask him to "sell" it to PJEFC and we can use it for next year's Christmas.

Hi Florence,

Yes, it is!

Well, actually minutes after I send out my last comment, I had another thought: I cannot say that it is a "perfect representation on the Christmas theme" bec it did capture the "Glory to God in the highest" part, but it didn't include the 2nd part of it: "and on earth peace among those with whom He is pleased!" Luke 2:14

Remember that a picture of Raphael which depicts the School of Athens? Plato's fingers point toward heaven, while Aristotle's hand toward the ground.

The theme of Christmas is not only one dimensional, holy & molly, glorious & majestic. It has it's other dimension: something related to human, something very down to the earth, something very close to the heart...

But that might be the limitation of light works though: the nature of luminaries is to remind one of what is noble & glorious. And it is also the universal symbol of joy and comfort.

Anyway, thank God that the symbol on high exists now in Tg Sepat.

Hi Florence,
I agree with you. But it is a great representation of Christmas in Tanjung Sepat - a small sleepy fishing village. But in this village there are more than 30 chinese temples that are bigger than the church (and all the temples are very canggih!!). To have a church decorated with this heavenly declaration of peace and good news is a welcome change.
