Even More Books...

Further to my earlier post about the latest additions to my library, here are the rest of my book shopping spree that exhausted my book allowance for 2009! I am a happy man for the next few weeks.

I have thoroughly enjoyed J. R. Daniel Kirk's Unlocking Romans. I might write a review later on, if time permits.

Next on my immediate reading list is Seyoon Kim's Christ and Caesar: The Gospel and Roman Empire in the Writings of Paul and Luke. It would be interesting to see how Kim goes against the tide in arguing that the dominant anti-imperial interpretation is, in reality, difficult to sustain. If Kim's thesis can be sustained (and that will have to wait until I finish interacting with Kim and whether I am persuaded by his argument), then the prevailing scholarship on Paul and the Empire will have much to reconsider.

I'm looking forward to read Kim's book too. Been browsing it at SKS a few times but still not led by the Holy Spirit to buy it yet. Perhaps I'll read it at TTC's library after July.

Look forward to your interaction with Kim. I also wonder how he argues against the currents. But after reading his conclusion I dont think his thesis is as polemical as the backcover suggests.

He agrees that the "gospel" of Jesus as King is hinge against Caesar. Anyway, look forward to ur posts.

Just bought Collins & Collins from Canaanland. A topic that I have always been interested in. Was also looking for Bauckham but sadly it was not available.

HI Sze Zeng,
Yeah - Kim seems to go against the currents - even his previous book as well, as going against the New Perspective on Paul.

Hi Davinci,

I think "a stern, convinced historical critic" is not a very accurate description. I would describe myself as a person who would like to read as widely as possible. Even as a narrative critic, as my PhD thesis would testify, I would not limit myself to read books on this area alone.

Hi Israel,
I think SUFES carries Bauckham's title
