Commentary/Theology Series Written by Asians?

Tony Siew (left in photo) who has been recently appointed New Testament lecturer at Trinity Theological College, Singapore, suggests that it is time for a commentary/theology series written solely by Asians.

He listed six reasons why such a series is not only justifiable but greatly needed. I applaud Tony's desire and dream for such a series, and could not agree more with his suggestion.

Would there be any international publisher interested in such a series?

The Asia Theological Association is publishing a series Asia Bible Commentary Series and have come out with a few books. The general editors are Bruce J. Nicholls and Brian Wintle.

Hi Alex,

Thanks for this - I am aware of the ABC series - but not all contributors are Asians. But it is a bit strange that the general editors are not Asians, even though they have spent significant years in Asia.

I believe what Tony has in mind is a truly Asian series, and it is a series on the theology of individual books, which is slightly different from a commentary series.

Kay Yong, I would echo to what you have said. Asians should rise up to the occasion and start producing our own resources. I am truly looking forward for such kind of 100% made in Asia resources. Such effort will also be relevant a great help for Asian Churches. Since you guys would be the best people (being an Asian) to interpret the scripture with the Asian traditions and the belief system in mind. KY I strongly believe that a scholar like you and Tony should start the ball rolling. Go for it bro….start writing. God in His sovereignty will bring forth the suitable publisher to publish your work. God Bless

This is very interesting! I would add another reason: that is our location and history as uniquely Asian provides us the different context not only to interpret the NT with this aspect in view but also to construct a NT theology that came out from living and engaging within this non-Western religious/philosophical environment.

It is really an exciting project.
