Acropolis = Disney?

Does Acropolis (above) = Disney (below)?

I have, for sometimes, suspected that some of my colleagues may have slightly different theological persuasion that remains hidden, only waiting to be manifested under certain circumstances. For example, some have called me a "closet pentecostal." Outwardly, I may not demonstrate any visible signs of being a pentecostal, and I blend in perfectly well with the traditional church. It was not until recently that some people discovered that I spent about 7 years in a pentecostal church. One of my students was even surprised at my prayers during one of our church's prayer meeting some months ago. She said, "Hmm...I never heard you prayed like that before." (whatever "that" means).

A couple of weeks ago, I discovered that one of my colleagues was rather shockingly, orthodox. It all happened this way.

Three of us were in a discussion trying to finalise the details of the study tour following the footsteps of Paul to Greece.

In our discussion, one of my colleagues asked, "How come Acropolis is not open at night? Isn't it like Disney World which stays open until late at night?"

Then my other colleague immediately stood up, made a sign of the Cross, and recited, "Kyrie, eleison; kyrie eleison; kyrie eleison."

After which he responded, "How could you equate Acropolis with Disney World? Kyrie, eleison; kyrie eleison; kyrie eleison"

Hmmm....could my colleague be a closet orthodox believer?

I talked to Steven the other day about the trip. How we wish to have a spare sum of RM8000 to join the tour :(

Possible for your colleague to be an Orthodox. A church mate of mine from O.R.Presbyterian Church unashamedly claimed himself to be a closet Catholic. And I dont know what stopping him from 'returning' to the Roman church though.

As for myself, I drink from R.Williams, A.Thiselton, O.O'Donovan, A.McGrath, N.T Wright and other fellow Anglicans, and I dont really submit to the Westminster Confession, though possessing an *official* membership certificate of the Presbyterian Church :)

Anyway, it seems that our churches in this third millennium fill with people with ecumenical spirit.

huh? I must be missing something here. Reciting kyrie eleison. When did the Acropolis become a Christian sacred place? Even for a closet orthodox

JW,

It's only less than S$3500!! Not a lot mah....

Alex,
Perhaps sacred for a closet orthodox?

Hi Alex,

Just a guess:
Perhaps, KY's colleague was asking mercy for the other colleague's haphazardness to equate Acropolis, a valuable historical artifact, with Disneyland, which according to Jean Baudrillard, a postmodern simulacra which was created to deceives people into believing that we are living in a 'real world', as contrast to Disneyland, the alleged fantasy world.

And coupled with the presumption that the other colleague is not a Catholic, if he uses 'Kyrie eleison', he probably drawn from the Orthodox tradition.

Thus the connection.

Agak saja...

You are not one of Kar Yong's student are you?

Hi JW,

You got it right!! It so happened that my colleague who mentioned about Disney is one that makes annual trip to Los Angeles (whether to Disney or not, I shall not speculate), and the other who begged for mercy married a Greek wife....So anyone with a Greek connection would naturally be "upset" for such kind of equation. Hence he suddenly turned to the Greek Orthodox tradition for mercy.

Now you see the connection...

KY, great! After all, Derrida is not that correct. There is *really* such thing as authorial intention! :)

Yup, potential student...Kyrie, eleison~ Deo volente~

JW,
Yes - Who says authorial intent cannot be established? You have just done that, and I must say you did a very good job at it - not to mention your exegesis...

haha...
