Intentional Disciple Making Conference, Singapore

Together with the pastoral team from my church, I am off to Singapore to attend the Intentional Disciple Making Conference at Covenant Evangelical Free Church, Woodlands, for the next few days. For those days that I will be away, blogging activities will take a break as I do not intent to carry along my notebook.

I will be staying at Trinity Theological College, and hopefully, will be able to catch up with Tony Siew and Sze Zeng.

OK...so that's why you come over. About 2 Sundays ago, TTC's 1st year students visited Covenant EFC. After the service, we had a dialog session with the leadership of the church. The second-man in-charge spent about an hour explaining and promoting the IDMC program to us.

During the Q&A time, I asked this question, "That is an impressive program your church has for discipleship. May I know how does this program translate its content and transform the disciples to engage in socio-political issues like youth's addiction to online gaming, Christian engagement in the public, homosexuality, abortion, etc?"

The speaker replied that each organization has its own area to focus on. Those issues that I mentioned are for organization like Trinity Theological College to engage in. The church is focus to make disciples.

That exchange got me thinking what exactly is a "disciple", μαθητής?

Hi Sze Zeng,

Spiritual disciples?

A disciple that places emphasis on the dichotomy of the sacred and secular? A disciple that is good at winning souls for the Church but fails to make significant impact in the wider community as authentic witness?

I think there is much more for us to rethink the meaning being a "disciple". Jesus never asks that his disciples withdraw from the world.

Well, I hope to pick up some useful stuff at the IDMC.

Hi Sceptics,
Edmund indeed is a very good preacher. A good preacher don't read word for word from the script, unlike LKY who reads his sermon :-)

No wonder LKY's sermons are ....ok...better don't say anything more
